This is the start of John! While Matthew, Mark, and Luke talked about the start on the earthly life of Jesus, John went all the way back to the beginning of time to introduce Jesus.
So what can we learn about Jesus?
Jesus is with God from the beginning (1:2)
Jesus played a part in the creation process (1:3)
Jesus has life in him (1:4)
Jesus is the light of men (AKA “he helps guide men, like how we use flashlights when searching in the dark) (1:5)
The point of light is to help see in the darkness. Anyone who tried to search in the dark probably knows how useful light is. In a similar way, Jesus counters darkness so much that “the darkness did not comprehend it” (1:5). So with Jesus, we don’t have to worry about being overwhelmed by whatever darkness is thrown in our path.
