John 15:9-10

Jesus talked about the importance of abiding in Jesus -- it helps us "bear fruit"! After starting the analogy, Jesus explains what "abiding" in Jesus is like.

First, Jesus established that the Father loved Jesus, and Jesus loved the disciples -- and by extension, us too (15:9). With these two in mind, Jesus calls the disciples to abide in His love. According to Merriam-Webster, one of the meanings of "abide" is "to remain stable or fixed in a state". It's one thing to accept Jesus's love, but it's another thing to become stabilized from Jesus's love.

In fact, Jesus talked about how when the disciples keep His commandments, they abide in his love (15:10). In the past few chapters, Jesus's calls to the disciples include serving other people, loving one another, and not being stuck in fear. However, it's worth noting that the disciples keeping commandments is meant to be comparable to Jesus keeping the Father's commandments. He demonstrated such love before cross!

By keeping Jesus's commandments, we can abide in His love. No guilt to hold us back.
