John 18:22-24

When the high priest interrogated Jesus, Jesus told the high priest that he told these things various times and that there are plenty of people who can tell the high priest the teachings of Jesus. Basically, Jesus used what is now known as the "right to remain silent".

However, the high priest was not having it. One of the officers "struck Jesus with the palm of his hand" because the officer thought that Jesus did not respond correctly to the high priest (18:22). Even though Jesus relied on legal processes (like the need to collect witnesses and the role of self-confession), he still got smacked, and the smacking reveals that the officer simply detested Jesus.

Eventually, Annas sent Jesus bound to Caiaphas.
