John 19:38-42

Updated: Mar 27, 2021

With the death of Jesus comes burial. And some people who have familiarity with Jesus took part in it.

Joseph of Arimathea, a secret disciple of Jesus, got permission from Pilate to take the body of Jesus. Nicodemus (remember him from John 3?) also came and brought some myrrh and aloes. Both of them bound Jesus in linen based on Jewish burial customs. Then they laid Jesus in a unique tomb.

It's worth noting that both Joseph and Nicodemus were Jews and that the time period was right before a Sabbath. Jeremy Myers talked about how the burial date is likely a Thursday (Redeeming God). We also know that Joseph had great riches (from Matthew 27) and that Joseph feared the Jewish leaders (from John 19:38). There are some questions regarding Joseph and the tomb, but I found that Faith and Facts had a neat in-depth article in this webpage.
