John 4:1-3

Updated: Jul 14, 2020

Remember the part where John explained how he baptized less people? Eventually, Jesus learned about it.

However, technically, Jesus did not baptize himself! (4:2) John clarifies that when Jesus baptized (from 3:22), he did baptism through the disciples. The definition of "baptize" from dictionary.com supports the interpretation because the definition could also mean "administer baptism" in addition to "immerse in water". In essence, Jesus is the director of the baptism, and the water immersion itself is done through the disciples. Think of it as Steve Jobs "making" iPhones in oversight of creation process and design even though the factories technically manufacture the iPhones by putting the pieces together.

Because of the controversy on baptizing, Jesus decided to go to Galilee (4:3). It's likely that Jesus knew that now isn't the time to face the Pharisees head on (not to mention that Jesus intends on ministering to other places).
