John 4:19-24

The Samaritan woman saw that Jesus isn't an ordinary man. She saw him as a prophet, someone of God. That got her to bring up one of her toughest questions on God (so it could be settled). The question -- should the worship place be on Jerusalem or the mountain?

Turns out that Jesus said that in the future, the location doesn't matter. Jesus proclaims in 4:21 worship outside of Jerusalem and the mountain. The context implies that it is a call for the Samaritan people to worship in other places (cohortative indicative used), especially since Jesus transitions into the type of worship he likes. Initially, only the Jews are familiar with Savior Jesus, who is a Jew, (from 4:22 as well as where Jesus went in ministry), but with the future expansion, Jesus proclaims the keys to great worship -- spirit and truth (4:23-24).

Spirit is involved because God is spirit (4:24). Thus, God does not depend on location in order for people to seek him. In fact, anytime we worship God, we work with the Spirit! Yes, even in the bathroom. Truth is involved in order for our hearts to be in line with God's truth. According to Merriam-Webster, worshipping God means honoring/respecting God, and we can't really honor God if we're emphasizing fake stuff about God.

When Jesus answered the woman's question, Jesus focused on the core themes of worship rather than the side stuff. In other words, he went straight to the cut. We can do the same when we present God's themes or even respond to others' questions when sharing Jesus.
