John 5:24

Updated: Jun 26, 2020

With the established link between Jesus and the Father brings another fundamental verse of the Bible. Let's get in to it!

With Jesus's ability and authority on life matters, he proclaims that anyone who "hears [His] word and believes in Him" would not only have "everlasting life" but also "passed from death into life" while "not com[ing] into judgment" (5:24).

Part of the reason why believing in Jesus means getting everlasting life is because Jesus has authority on life. Jesus, as judge, declares the route as an option to escape judgment too. As we saw before and will see later, "judgment" is based on the future judgment that Jesus would later do, and such judgment is an evaluation of our actions. And if we're honest, there are times when we screwed up -- badly -- when interacting with other people. And because we have done serious screw-ups, our evaluation would not be good. That's why Jesus came down to proclaim a way for us to be cleared. As we'll see in later event, he provided the way via the cross/resurrection (with the resurrection demonstrating the defeat of death).

Additionally, the everlasting life receiving is described as "hav[ing] passed from death into life". The word "passed" is in past tense, so after we believe in Jesus, the transition from death to life has been completed. We are no longer in death territory. As we'll see a few verses later, the everlasting life involves us getting resurrected for life after we die (because we are no longer in death territory).

So how do we cross from death to life and get everlasting life? By believing in Jesus. Believing in Jesus is accepting that we need Lord Jesus (who is Son) to be clear from future judgment and counting on Jesus for helping us go from death to life (via his death/resurrection). That's it for us. Jesus as Lord (and Son) provides a path for us to eternal life and Jesus as Savior essentially carries us from death to life.

For the readers who decided to accept Jesus and count on Him for saving us, you are guaranteed everlasting life. I don't have a "I raise my hand" button or "I accepted Jesus" button because faith starts internally. (You can raise your hand though.)
